Meet Joseph Wing, a Recording Arts & Show Production programgraduate of F.I.R.S.T. Institute in Orlando, Florida. Also known as JT, the graduate’s first experience with audio came from his time as a band member when he was younger.
That’s when he recorded some things with a few of his friends on Garage Band. Basically, his first experience into audio consisted of just hanging out and having fun. But it piqued his interest!
JT Wing Takes on the F.I.R.S.T. Institute Experience
JT had a conversation with his parents about furthering his education after high school. They asked him if he could do anything he wanted to do and money was NOT an option, what would he choose to do. He said his first choice would be music… or something within the recording industry.
And that’s what led him to pursue his education at F.I.R.S.T. Institute.
In order to graduate from F.I.R.S.T., you’re required to complete a student internship. Joseph landed one at Orlando’s KDS Recording Studios. His gig started with him hanging out at the front desk, answering the phones and checking people in for sessions.
Soon, he began sitting in on professional sessions with various engineers, learning their various techniques. He also took on the tasks of setting up cables and mics for them. The young man’s goal was to soak up as much knowledge as he could as a KDS intern.
What JT Loves Most of F.I.R.S.T.
JT Wing’s favorite thing about F.I.R.S.T. Institute is the small class sizes “of course.” He also loves the hands-on learning approach offered at the Florida recording arts school. From about Day 2, he and fellow students were already on computers working with Pro Tools.
They were already learning Pro Tools functions and how to navigate through the DAW. The Recording Arts & Show Production instructortaught them basic audio principles to support each action as well.
Joseph says the instructors made sure the students were well-prepared to act professional and mature. The instructors did a good job of getting them ready for the real world and their future industries.
Life Has Been Amazingly Successful for F.I.R.S.T. Graduate JT Wing
After graduation, JT took his first paying job with Always Entertainment, a television production company. Eventually, he was promoted to a field audio job, where’s he worked for a handful of networks, conducting a multitude of interviews.
And he’s worked for some really big television networks, including FOX, CBS Sports Network, ESPN, LAX Sports Network, MLB Network… as well as some world-famous sports brands like the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, and Florida Panthers.
JT has interviewed world-class celebrities such as Guy Harvey, Simon Cowell, Mario Lopez, Richard Sherman, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Dwyane Wade, Kris Jenner, Steve Harvey and many more. He’s even had the honor of interviewing our former First Lady Michelle Obama!
Joseph Wing has done press junkets for the likes of Ride Along 2, Rio 2… behind the scenes shoots with former NY Giants Running Back Rashad Jennings… and recently he did some audio work on the upcoming release Bad Boys for Life, also known as Bad Boys 3.
This F.I.R.S.T. Institute graduate’s career is on a roll!
F.I.R.S.T. Prepares Students for the Real World
According to JT, the thing about audio is that the fundamentals and the foundation and the different gear you learned on at school can translate into a multitude of different career paths outside of school.
Although he never would’ve imagined it when he was still a student, JT ended up working in television broadcasting after graduation. He says F.I.R.S.T. Institute prepared him to tackle this and any other career path or obstacle that comes his way.
His advice to others is, “Don’t pigeon hole yourself.” When he first arrived at the Orlando recording arts school, he never would’ve guessed that he’d someday be working on a professional broadcast or doing interviews on the set of a TV show.
F.I.R.S.T. Alumnus JT Wing also advises others to follow your passion. It brought you to this place in life for a reason. So, continue chasing your passion and never give up on your dreams.
