Meet Tshela Green, the Director of the Graphic Design and Web Development program at F.I.R.S.T. Institute of Orlando, Florida. She was just a kid when she first fell in love with the web and graphics industry.
Tshela Green’s Background in Graphic Design
Ms. Green’s very first project was designing a bookmark for her school’s library as a child. This was a school contest. There’s pride in her eyes when she tells the camera she won “out of the entire school.”
That was the first time Tshela realized she had the skills to create something people could actually use and enjoy.
Ms. Green has a degree in graphic design. She’s also certified in Full Stack Web Development. While still in school, she acted as the lead on a team project. It won best UI design.
Tshela’s first job was working for a book publisher. She edited huge educational textbooks, including creating small illustrations. The Director says this was definitely a good introduction into the graphic design industry.
She also did a “hack-a-thon.” This is a meet-up that allows you to integrate various communications technologies. The designer integrated one company’s technology into an app she created. Ms. Green won an award from the company for that.
Central Florida’s Maitland Art Center also gave her an award. At the educational institution, she received an international learned design award for her work in the marketing department. As a young designer, receiving this award was absolutely phenomenal.
Tshela Green Helps Create Culture at F.I.R.S.T. Institute
What inspires the F.I.R.S.T. Institute program director is the ability to impact others with visual communications. She laughs as she tells the camera that designers are some of the most amazing people.
Tshela believes designers really impact the world. This is done by creating culture.
Her favorite part of the F.I.R.S.T. Institute Graphic Design and Web Development program is working on projects. She says they’re fun and really integrate creativity. These hands-on projects allow students to express themselves in their own unique ways.
Currently, Ms. Green is working on her passion project, which is a brand she’s launched. The educator has dreamed of doing this for quite a while. She finds fulfillment in building on the project more and more over time.
In order to find work and survive in the web development and graphic design industry, Tshela Green says you have to have guts. You must be persistent. If this is something you love and genuinely want to do, you have to keep pursuing it.
You must be willing to put yourself out there and go after what you want. Things won’t happen if you just sit around waiting for opportunities to come to you. It takes initiative to make it happen.
Just be passionate about what you do. And it will all come together. You’ll be able to do it.
